The legendary Kaizer Motaung Snr is one of the big names in South African football. He currently serves Founder and Managing Director at Kaizer Chiefs.
Kaizer Motaung rose to prominence in the early 1960s, at the time he played for Orlando Pirates. In 1968 he went to join North American side Atlanta Chiefs. In his debut season he went to score sixteen goals in fifteen matches, making him the top goalscorer in the league. Motaung was also voted as the Rookie of the Season.
He founded one of the best football clubs in Africa in 1970 in SOWETO when it was not fashionable to do so. Mr Motaung represents what black excellence look like for any young African boy, he’s an affirmation that anything is possible.
Motaung has been very active in South African football, having served in the National Soccer League(NSL) and the South African Football Association (SAFA) executives. In 1996 he and alongside Dr Irvin Khoza founded the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The two have been instrumental in bringing sponsorship deals to the PSL over the years.
Motaung enjoy a three year spell with Atlanta Chiefs before returning to South Africa in 1971. In 1974 he went back to North America to join Denver Dyamos until 1975. While still an active player Motaung formed Kaizer Chiefs. The name Kaizer Chiefs was derived from his name and that of Atlanta Chiefs.
Outside of his successful footballing career Kaizer Motaung is a husband and mostly a father. He is married to Valeta Julekga Motaung. The pair have been married for over forty years. Their union has since been blessed with five beautiful children, Thabo Ceyland Motaung, Bobby Motaung, Jessica Motaung, Kaizer Motaung Jnr and Kemiso Motaung.
Little is very known about Valeta Motaung and her occupation. Thabo the first born child of Kaizer and Valeta Motaung passed away on June 2012 after suffering from meningitis at Garden City Hospital. Thabo was a businessman. The nature of businesses he owned is not known. According to Bobby, his younger brother, he was survived by four children, two sons and two daughters.
Motaung’s children all play an achieve role at Kaizer Chiefs. Bobby serves as the manager, Jessica is the marketing manager, Kaizer Jnr is the CEO while Kemiso is the digital manager. It is public knowledge that Kaizer Chiefs is a family owned business, so we can also safely assume that Valeta Motaung also plays an active role at the club.
